I am a human geographer working on urbanisation, infrastructure and governance in South Asia, with a focus on water and technology.  My current research falls into two main areas, centred around Delhi-NCR, India:

1. Water
a) ‘informality’, localised governance arrangements and ideas of statehood
b) urban groundwater use and the materiality of technologies and environments
c) reform initiatives including public-private partnerships for urban water management
d) changing understandings of water and technology over the ‘long nineteenth century’.

2. Digital technology (with Sanjay Srivastava)
a) new methods of urban governance
b) new actors and expertise
c) effects on urban form and spatial planning.

I have done other work on:

• community water management in Gilgit-Baltistan
• water, sanitation and health in low-income settings, particularly Bangladesh and Tanzania
• participation, governance and innovation in India’s Smart Cities Mission
• urban policy reform in India (under JNNURM)
• urbanisation, construction and internal migration in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India and Pakistan
• urban displacement and resettlement
• ‘right to the city’ movements
• the role of international financial institutions in Mumbai’s ‘world class city’ vision
• the ‘Mumbai model’ of public-private partnerships for slum upgrading
• the ecological and social effects of the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Madhya Pradesh
• development related displacement and infrastructure projects in Mumbai
• community enumeration methodologies
• shack fires in South Africa
• social protection policy in Ethiopia, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Africa.

मैं सामाजिक विज्ञान, जियोग्रफी, करता और दकशिन एसिया में शहरिकरण, इंफ्रस्तरुकचा और शासन के उपर देखता हुँ। इस कि अंदर मैं खास तौर पर पानी का ध्यान देता हुँ।  आजकल मेरा शोध दो मुख्य क्षेत्रों में आता है, जो दिल्ली-एनसीआर, इंडिया के आसपास केंद्रित है:
1. पानी
a) ‘अनौपचारिकता’, स्थानीय प्रशासन की वयवस्था, और रज्य के बारे में विचर
b) शहरी भूजल का उपयोग और प्रौध्योगिकी तथा वातावरन का भौतिक रुप
c) रिफोर्म की योजना और शहरी पानी कि पुबलिक-प्रिवत परत्नेरशिपस
d) पानी का इतिहास, खस तौर पर अठारहवीं, उन्नीसवीं सदियों और बीसवीं सदि की शुरुआत।

2. डिजिटल प्रौद्योगिकी (संजय श्रीवास्तव के साथ)
a) शहरी शासन के नए तरीके
b) नए अभिनेताओं और विशेषज्ञता
c) शहरी रूप और स्थानिक योजना पर प्रभाव.
