शहर से सोचता हूँ
From the city, I think
कि जंगल क्या मेरी सोच से भी कट रहा है
is the jungle being cut from my thoughts too
जंगल में जंगल नहीं होंगे
if the jungle can’t be in the jungle
तो कहाँ होंगे?
where must it be?
शहर की सड़कों के किनारे के पेड़ों में होंगे।
It will be in the trees beside the city roads.

रात को सड़क के पेड़ों के नीचे
At night below the trees of the road
सोते हुए आदिवासी परिवार के सपने में
in the dreams of a sleeping Adivasi family
एक सल्फी का पेड़
a toddy palm tree [1]
और बस्तर की मैना आती है
and a Bastar myna come
पर नींद में स्वप्न देखते
but seeing these dreams in sleep
उनकी आँखें फूट गई हैं।
their eyes redden. 

परिवार का एक बूढ़ा है
There is an old man in the family
और वह अभी भी देख सुन लेता है
even now he can see and hear
पर स्वप्न देखते हुए आज
but today having seen the dream
स्वप्न की एक सूखी टहनी से
a dry dream branch
उसकी आँख फूट गई।
