बाज़ार - केदारनाथ सिंह

'आओ बाज़ार चलें'
 उसने कहा
 'बाज़ार में क्या है'?
 मैंने पूछा
 'बाज़ार में धूल है'
 उसने हंसते हुए कहा|

एक अजीब-शी मिट्टी की चमक
 उसके हँसने में थी
 जो मुझे अच्च्ची लगी
 मैंने पूछा - धूल!
 'धूल में क्या है'?
 'जनता' - उसने बेहद सादगी से कहा|

मैं कुछ देर स्तब्ध खड़ा रहा
 फिर हम दोनों चल पड़े
 धूल और जनता की तलाश में
 वहाँ पहुँचकर
 हमें आश्चर्य हुआ
 बाज़ार में न धूल थी
 न जनता
 दोनों को साफ़ कर दिया गया था

'Come on, let's go to the market' 
He said
'What's in the market?'
I asked
'There's dust in the market'
He said, laughing.

A strange sweetness 
shone in his smile
I liked it
Dust! - I asked
'What's in dust?'
He said very simply - 'People'.

I stood stunned for some time
Then we both went
In search of dust and people
Arriving there
We were surprised
There was no dust in the market
No people
Both had been cleaned away.
